Summer Internship
Yesterday was sadly my last day at my summer internship at the Decorative Arts Center of Ohio. It was very bittersweet, I am sad that summer is coming to a close and my time there is done but I am very excited to get back to Chicago and to start up classes (plus my new internship). In this post I'm gonna talk about my internship, as well as give some tips about finding and working an internship.
Getting an Internship
1.) Apply to a lot Places & I Mean A LOT: Don't just apply to one or two because odds are, especially if its your first internship, it may not work out. Send in loads of applications to any business or organization you are interested in.
2.) Face to Face Contact is Key: It's not enough to just email or drop off an application, you need to meet face to face with whoever is in charge of the internship program so that they have a face to match with the resume. This may be difficult if you are applying out of state, in that case make a phone call or ask if you could chat with them over Skype to explain your interest. It will really pay off.
3.) Don't Get Discouraged: I know you probably hear this one all the time but its true! Just because one place didn't work out doesn't mean another one won't. Keep searching until you find the right opportunity for you.
Having an Internship
1.) Don't Set Your Sights Too High: Depending on the organization, you could be doing a number of things as an intern. Some places really incorporate their interns in vital decisions and tasks, others may have you fetching coffee and making copies and THATS OK! Just being involved in the business is great experience and if you do what you are told proficiently and with a great attitude they may trust you with more vital tasks, or at the very least give you a great recommendation for your next job or internship.
2.) Dress to Impress, Within Reason: Different organizations have different environments and that plays a key factor in how you dress and present yourself at work. For example since I interned at an art museum my bright outfits and bold jewelry were met with optimism and compliments, but in a more corporate setting it may not have been as appreciated. So be sure to take notice of what type of environment you are in and if you want to add some flair to a dull work wardrobe fun shoes and accessories can brighten up an assemble. Just be sure to maintain an air of professionalism.
My Internship Experience
I personally loved my internship experience this summer. My
coworkers were always wonderful and made me feel welcomed and a part of the team from the start. I was trusted with many tasks that pertained to my field in PR but I also got to help out around the museum doing tours and working the gift shop when needed. My favorite part was working our summer events such as our summer exhibition opening and other evening events. On my last day we even had a little celebration with pizza and cake, I was also presented with a gift from the staff which was so touching because it really made me feel appreciated and valued by everyone that worked there.
