Staying Fit in the Winter and in the New Year

Happy New Years Eve! I feel like the most common new years resolutions have to do with health and fitness so here are some tips on how to stay fit, even during these cold and dreary winter months. In the past few years I really fell in love with working out (I know gag) but it honestly makes me feel great not only physically but mentally, honestly it is my number one source of stress and anxiety relief. These tips can help you stay motivated during the first few months of your resolution.

Bundle Up or Work Inside: The biggest thing keeping us from working out this time of year is the cold weather. If you enjoy running or outdoor exercise make sure to bundle up in warm fitness gear, but also remember that your body heats up as you exercise. If you can't stand the cold there are plenty of exercises you can do inside whether you take a class or go on the treadmill at the gym or even follow along to a YouTube video at home, don't use the weather as an excuse to simply not exercise. Here is a simple chart to help you decide how much you need to bundle up while running outside.

Add Some Variety: Again especially in this weather you may not want to go running everyday, so make yourself a schedule of different activities for different days. I mostly enjoy cardio so running and going on an elliptical fill up most of my workouts, but I also make room to do other workouts such as yoga, pilates, strength training, and even more recently barre. Here are two of my favorite beginner YouTube workouts that I still go back to.

Pilates: Basic Pilates Matt Workout for Dancers   (Don't let the Dancers in the title scare you off this workout is great for anyone.)

Track Track Track: I'm not saying be obsessive about calories you eat and burn but simply tracking your food and activity can help keep you on the right track. In my bullet journal I mark each day I workout and what I eat each day. This helps me keep track of not only my health goals but also my mood and other things that cause certain eating and fitness habits. You can easily track this stuff in a handwritten journal or even an app on your phone. I also track my steps and sleep using my Kate Spade fitness tracker. I am obsessed with this thing I always have it on and it really helps me keep track of my activity during the day.

Lastly a cute workout outfit can always help inspire and motivate you. :) I hope everyone has a great new year and I can't wait to see what 2018 has in store.
